Identifying and Controlling Japanese Knotweed

The invasive Japanese Knotweed is gaining traction at Elko Lake, particularly on properties bordering Anderson Road. It is important that we do all that we can to erradicate this invasive plant because its strong growth forms dense thickets that shade out and displace native plants, and its invasive root system can damage concrete foundations, buildings, roads, paving, retaining walls and architectural sites.

At this early stage, simply cutting back the plant and covering the remaining plant with a tarp to block the sun can stop its growth. Herbicide use is not recommended due to the runoff into Elko Lake and the resulting negative impact to aquatic animals. Treating the early growth of Japanese Knotweed now can save our community future headaches and expense. If you see Japanese Knotweed on your property, please take steps to control it.  Here is more information regarding control methods for Japanese Knotweed from the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture >>
